VANILLA IN ANCIENT ISRAEL CONFIRMS THE BIBLE

Vanilla is one of the most recognizable flavors in the world today, but its use
goes back much further than most people realize. Historically, vanilla
comes from orchids native to regions like Mesoamerica, where it was
prized for both its fragrance and flavor. It was never something that
grew everywhere. It had to be cultivated carefully, transported
intentionally, and valued highly. From the beginning, vanilla was not
common. It was a luxury.

Now archaeologists have uncovered evidence that ancient people in places
like Tel Megiddo and Jerusalem were using vanilla thousands of years
ago. At Megiddo, dating back to around 1650–1550 BC, vanilla appears to
have been used in burial practices, likely for its fragrance and
preserving qualities. Even more striking, jars discovered in Jerusalem
from around 600 BC contained traces of vanilla-infused wine, placing
this directly in the time of Judah’s final kings, including King
Zedekiah.

That matters because the Bible describes a world exactly like this. Not primitive. Not
isolated. Scripture records societies that traded valuable goods across
long distances and used oils, spices, and perfumes with purpose.
Ecclesiastes 9:8 speaks of oil as a sign of honor. Proverbs 7:17
mentions beds perfumed with costly spices. Song of Solomon 4:14 lists
exotic imports like myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. These are not vague
ideas. They reflect real materials moving through real trade networks.

passages like 1 Kings 10, where goods flowed into Israel from distant
